Advice to high school juniors from a senior! Kat goes over six simple tips that contributed to her junior year success.

Advice to high school juniors from a senior! Kat M. goes over six simple tips that contributed to her junior year success, including prioritizing her mental health and keeping a balance between studying and socializing. Check out her video below!

Make your mental health a priority (0:15)

Everyone has bad days, but if these bad days stretch for a long period of time and you continue to feel stressed out from school, it’s time to take a step back. Talk to a trusted adult and make sure you are mentally healthy before returning to your school work. Though it may seem like it sometimes, school is never more important than your mental health!

Take courses that are challenging (within reason!) (0:40)

Colleges do like seeing rigorous classes on your schedule. However, it's important to pick classes that will challenge but not overwhelm you.

Talk to your counselor about the college search (1:05)

Your high school counselor’s job is to help you succeed, so take advantage of this resource as much as possible. Ask your counselor questions about the college search and keep them updated on your progress. Your counselor will help you generate a list of colleges that are the best fit for you and then help you work toward getting accepted.

Make a list of teachers for your college recommendations (1:26)

Choose teachers who know you well and are aware of your potential. Colleges usually require recommendations from teachers that teach core subjects like English, science, or history; however, some will accept recommendations from elective courses in the arts or physical education.

Choose extracurriculars that will ultimately make you happy (1:53)

Colleges prefer to see someone involved in extracurriculars they genuinely enjoy and are committed to, as opposed to being a part of several extracurriculars and having little to no involvement. Don’t spread yourself too thin!

Balance school with your social life (2:15)

Socializing is a great way to reduce the stress of junior year. Have fun and work hard!

High School Class of 2020

CollegeXpress has helped me with the college application process. The tips and tricks for important essays were so helpful. I also gained useful knowledge about college life. Even though I’m fully online, CollegeXpress has helped me develop a sense of how college is in person. The experiences from college students that were featured on their Instagram page have shown the good, the bad, and the “secret” life on campus from a reliable perspective. Not to mention, they relieved my feelings of anxiety about the workload. I can now understand how it can be stressful, but it takes self-control and willpower to get assignments completed on time and with quality.

High School Class of 2022

CollegeXpress helped in my journey by comparing multiple colleges for my final decision. While looking at different colleges, I was able to compare the tuition expenses and that landed me with the college that I’m currently enrolled in, Western Kentucky University. Thank you!

$500 Refer-A-Friend Scholarship Winner

I love the site CollegeXpress; it has been very helpful finding colleges and getting them to send me information. It has also been very, very helpful with finding tons of scholarships. Also, I told many of my friends about it and they love it as well!

$2,000 Community Service Scholarship Winner, 2020

As I transition to furthering my education, I can say with certainty that it simply wouldn’t be possible without the help of generous organizations such as CollegeXpress. Those who initially founded CX had no idea their platform would give a plethora of information to a first-generation homeless kid native to the ghettos of over half a dozen states. Everyone at CX and Carnegie Dartlet gave me a chance at a future when the statistics said I had none. And for that, I thank them.

I am very honored to be this year’s recipient of the Multicultural Student Community Service Scholarship! This scholarship is vital to helping me achieve and fulfill my dreams, and gives me confidence and motivation as I begin my college career. The CollegeXpress website has been invaluable over the past year as I planned my educational and professional goals. I highly recommend it to all students as they begin to focus on their college and career interests. The website is a wonderful guide to schools and scholarships.
